Jinx by Chloe Lewis, Illustrated by Sara Foresti
Jinx is part of the Reluctant Reader Graphic Books from Maverick Publishing. It is the story of teenager Cassie who has moved to a new school. Things aren’t going very well for Cassie until she finds a mysterious book in the library. Set out in the style of a comic, this book is full of eye catching illustrations and a modern storyline that will grab the attention of the most reluctant of readers. I really like the way that there was a background to the story and an introduction to the main characters at the front of the book. I trialled this book in my classroom and in the school library where it reached a wide audience and it was a big hit!
Off Beat by Chloe Lewis, Illustrated by Lisa Wiley
Offbeat is the story of Tash, a drummer who starts a band to compete against her former bandmates when they have an argument. A topic that is relevant to today in our time of Talent Competitions like X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, this story is very appealing and was enjoyed by a wide range of readers in my school. Everyone who read it asked for more books like this one. The colourful illustrations and easy-to-read text are enjoyable and weave an engrossing tale for all.
HELIX; The Stranger and HELIX: The City of Chaos by Jamie Hex with Illustrations by Jake Hill
These two books are the third and fourth instalments in the HELIX series aimed at reluctant readers. Set in a futuristic time, the teenagers who form the Helix must find their missing guardians Noah and Harmony, while being on the run from Chayos, robots who have taken over the earth. Full of adventure and action, these books were a big hit with the children in my school, particularly the boys. They’ve made me promise to get them the rest of the series!
Dragon Lord by Kris Knight, Illustrated by Alan Brown
Of all the Graffix Books that I have read, this one was my favourite. I love dragons and dragon stories. Young Seb has always wanted to be a Dragon Lord but he doesn’t possess any magic. One day an opportunity presents itself to him. Will he take the chance and finally become a Dragon Lord?
Blindside by Alex Francis, Illustrated by Alan Brown
Dan wants to be a doctor but he also wants to play rugby. Torn between two worlds, school and sports, Dan has to figure out how to study and play. Can he do it? What will happen when his parents find out? Definitely a story for kids who may find themselves in a similar situation of being caught between pleasing their parents and being their own person.
The Graffix Books Reluctant Reader Series from Maverick Publishing is a great series of books to get reluctant readers hooked on reading again. The modern, up-to-date storylines, presented in a graphic novel style will grab attention at first glance. I trialled them with a variety of readers of different ages and they were a huge hit! I would highly recommend these books to everyone, reluctant reader or not.
